Barefoot ultra-marathoner running 24 hours to fight hunger…and more!

Just wanted to share a few links I’ve found over the past day or so, starting with one to Leif Rustvold’s blog, Distance Minimally. From his blog:

Next month, beginning on the morning of Saturday 20 March 2010, I will be running for 24 hours at the Pacific Rim One Day Run raising money to fight hunger. I will be toeing the line barefoot, and will run the whole race without shoes. I hope to run 100 miles, and raise $10 per mile. Contributions will go to the Oregon Food Bank through Firstgiving.

Make sure to click the Firstgiving link to donate to his cause if you’re interested. Now on to some other links…

  • linksVibram Five Fingers KSO: the Definitive Guide [Birthday Shoes] – Justin over at BirthdayShoes.com has put together a “definitive guide” to KSO’s, which is the model of VFF’s that I currently run in. If you scroll down the page, you’ll even notice a link to a run I participated in last year in them, Run a 5.5 mile road race in KSO Five Fingers with Brandon.
  • Interval training can cut exercise hours sharply [MSNBC] – Supposedly there is a new study that says that only 45 minutes of “interval training” can have the same affect as hours of jogging, biking, etc in terms of weight loss and muscle growth. As a person who actually has time to exercise and who enjoys running and working out, I still find it hard to relate to the target audience for these fads. I pity anyone who only has 45 minutes of free time during a week to get some exercise in. Plus, if you’re not dedicated to a healthy lifestyle in general (eating, exercising, sleeping) these quick fixes aren’t going to last long. Soon you’ll be skipping a weekly workout here and there, then you’ll just realize it’s one workout a week, so what’s the point. If it works for you, that’s great, but I’m just curious what your real goal is?
  • Born To Run: Christopher McDougall Interview [Outside] – The title pretty much gives it away, but here’s another great interview with McDougall, who talks running routines and shoes vs barefoot (briefly), amongst other topics.
  • Ultramarathoner Jenn Shelton [Outside] – Found this article through a link in the McDougall interview article. Anyways, Jenn Shelton was one half of the crazy couple that Christopher McDougall mentioned in his book, Born to Run…you know, the couple who stayed up all night partying the night before a big run? It’s an interesting look at her life and about the decisions she’s made throughout her running career. She seems to have all the talent in the world, but because her goals don’t always align with others in the running world, she hasn’t become one of the big names in ultra-running yet.

Thanks for the support Brandon! It’s been great to see the response that my One Day Run for Hunger is getting!

  2. Brandon says:

No problem, that’s what happens when you’re a barefoot world record holder!

For those of you who haven’t seen it, Barefoot Ken Bob has declared Leif the new record holder in the 50k division:
